What Drawer Box Side Thickness Should You Choose?
Drawer box sides are commonly offered in 1/2 inch, 5/8 inch, and 3/4 inch thicknesses. The difference may look minor, but it affects inside width, appearance, hardware compatibility, machining, and the feel of the finished drawer.
There is no universal best thickness. A compact vanity drawer, a production kitchen, and a substantial furniture drawer may each call for a different specification.
Thickness Changes the Usable Interior
Thicker sides take up more space. On a wide drawer, the loss may be barely noticed. On a narrow utensil, spice, or vanity drawer, the difference can affect the storage layout.
Thickness also changes visual proportion. A 1/2 inch side can look light and refined, while a 3/4 inch side creates a more substantial edge. The best appearance depends on drawer height, material, and cabinet style.
Drawer Connection offers plywood sides in 1/2 inch, 5/8 inch, and 3/4 inch thicknesses, allowing the box to be specified around the project.
A 1/2 Inch Side Keeps the Box Light
A 1/2 inch side is useful when the design benefits from a slimmer profile and greater internal width. It can suit many residential drawers, small replacement boxes, and applications where unnecessary weight should be avoided.
Material and joinery still matter. Quality plywood or solid wood with accurate dovetail or dowel construction can produce a durable box at this thickness. A thin side made from weak material with poor joints is a different product.
Hardware must be checked before choosing it. Blum states that its TANDEM range includes systems for wood drawer sides from 1/2 inch through 3/4 inch, but the exact runner model and box preparation still need to match.
A 5/8 Inch Side Offers a Middle Ground
A 5/8 inch side creates a more substantial box without using as much interior space as 3/4 inch material. It is a practical choice for custom kitchens, bathrooms, and specialty drawers.
Drawer Connection uses 5/8 inch prefinished Baltic birch for several specialty products, including knife, spice, and hair dryer drawers. Those products also require dovetail construction and undermount glides, showing how thickness, material, joinery, and hardware work as a package.
For cabinet shops standardizing a product line, 5/8 inch can provide a consistent appearance across ordinary and specialty boxes.
A 3/4 Inch Side Creates a Heavier Look
A 3/4 inch side may suit large furniture drawers, premium cabinetry, or projects where the thicker edge is part of the design. It provides more material for certain machining and fastening details.
It also reduces internal width and increases box weight. Those tradeoffs should be considered across a large order. Using the thickest available side on every drawer is not automatically better engineering.
Some hardware is intended for thicker sides. Drawer Connection notes that the Blum 563F is designed for 5/8 inch or 3/4 inch drawer material, while the 563H covers thinner ranges.
Let the Slide Choice Guide the Box
Undermount runners depend on specific side thickness, clearances, bottom position, notching, and locking devices. Side mount slides use space beside the box and may accept a wider range of construction, but remain visible when the drawer is open.
Choose the slide first or at the same time as the box. A drawer ordered without reference to its hardware may need modification before installation.
Do Not Judge Strength by Thickness Alone
Side thickness is only one part of performance. Material quality, bottom thickness, joint construction, slide capacity, drawer width, contents, and installation all matter.
A well specified 1/2 inch dovetail box can be more appropriate than a poorly planned 3/4 inch box. Start with the intended use, then build the specification around it.
